It's leaning towards autumn, and the time when I need some awesome movies.

So I ask you, what can be more awesome than Film Noir?

Anyone have any suggestions for Film Noir films (Preferably english audio, or at the very least english subtitles!) I would love to hear them! =)

Are you looking specifically for Film Noir, or just anything a bit dark, arty and moralistic?

Probably worth checking out some David Lynch ("Blue Velvet", "Lost Highway", "Fire Walk with Me"), "Crash" by Cronenberg is worth a watch also.

More mainstream stuff - "Se7en", "Memento", "American Psycho", "Dark City" (as mentioned above), "In Bruges" (I laughed my arse off at this btw, not sure if you were supposed to!), "Layer Cake", erm, some more stuff.

If you want more arty stuff, check out anything by Peter Greenaway, especially "A Zed and Two Naughts" and "The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover", but be ready for a headache.   Tongue

In Bruges is awesome - I think you were meant to laugh, because it's impossible not to, despite the subject matter.

Of course, all time top of the list has to be The Third Man, one of my favourite films of all time!

Some suggestions for (vaguely) more recent films...

Brick is your absolute classic noir transposed onto a High School, and it's brilliant.

Your neo-noir / tech-noir can be fulfilled by...

...both "animated", both great.

You get your smart and snappy black-comedy-as-noir thrills from Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Of course there's also a long list of near-noir stuff like Collateral, Gone Baby Gone, The Machinist, White Sands, A Simple Plan and so on.

Oh, you can also pick up a lot of the Coen Brother's stuff, as they draw heavily on noir themes.  Try Miller's Crossing.

Finally, if you've got a summer to kill and too much heavy Film Noir is getting you down, then you can also brighten yourself up without *really* abandoning your noir kick by watching Veronica Mars...  Wink

One word for you lot: AWESOME.
Thanks for the tips, I'll be sure to get right on investigating all of those! =)

And I dunno, I just really like the whole Noir style, say the way the protagonist (or other major characters) are presented and portrayed in, say Max Payne or Sin City (Marv and Dwight, most notably).

It's the whole..
I dunno, the trenchcoats, the husky voices, the whiskey, the cigarettes, the painkillers, the guns, the women, the grim-rugged-and-gray scenery.

It's just something that stirs my heart with the genre, something for me to dream away to, when I'm leaning on my balcony rail and smoking in the night/rain/fog.

And In Bruges was epic. =)

sometime last I was in the mood for movies I started to work myself through this list, checking off the stuff I'd seen and reading reviews and fallbacks on the stuff I hadn't.

Done! And I loved them!
I was absolutely riveted to my Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register as I lay in bed, getting ready to get some sleep (fat chance with these movies loaded onto it!).

But I have a craving for something more down-to-earth now, so next on the list will probably be one of the older ones.

If you're aiming for the older stuff watch "The Maltese Falcon" with Boggart himself...darn good movie. "The Manchurian Candidate" is another great one. Both quite gritty.

Not strickly Noir being a comedy but while you are watching B&W watch "Arsenic and Old Lace"...that film is simply brilliant.

I'm no film noir buff by any respect, but if you can tolerate subtitled films, Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register is awesome and I think falls under the noir banner.

Else In Bruges is probably the best experience of neo film noir, indeed.
